Answer:

valency is the number of free electrons an element can gain of loose for example if silicon have 4 electrons in it's outermost shell ...it has a valency 4 ..as oxygen has 6 electrons in it's outermost shell... it's valency is 2 as it can gain 2 electrons

Definition:

Valency of an element is defined as the combining capacity of that element. The valency is determined by the number of valence electrons present in the atom of that element. If the number of valence electrons of the atom of an element is less than or equal to 4, then the valency of the element is equal to the number of valence electrons .

Example:

The atom of silicon has four valence electrons. Thus, the valency of silicon is 4. On the other hand, if the number of valence electrons of the atom of an element is greater than 4, then the valency of the element is obtained by subtracting the number of valence electrons from 8. For example, the atom of Oxygen has 6 valence electrons. Thus the valency of Oxygen is( 8 -6) that is 2.
