★ VALENCY
---------------------

Valency is defined as the combining capacity of elements.

=> It is calculated on the basis of number of electrons in the outermost shell of an atom.

=> That is why, the outermost shell is also called valence shell.

=> When the number of electrons in the outermost shell is greater than 4, then valency is calculated by subtracting the number of electrons in the outermost shell from 8.

Electronic configuration of Magnesium = 2,8,2

So, valency of magnesium = 2

Electronic configuration of oxygen = 2,6

So, valency of oxygen = 8 - 6 = 2

Valency is defined as the number of electron which are required to full fill the last orbit of atom by loss and gain of electron is equal to the valency and it is called valency.
like (12)Mg :- 2,8,2
and (8)O2 :- 2,6
here the Mg easily lose the 2 electrons so its valency is 2 .
and the oxygen easily take the 2 electrons so its valency is also 2.
both have same valencies but Mg loss and O2 is gain.
I hope it will help u
