Definition :-

The number of hydrogen and chlorine atoms are any other monovalent atom which combined with one atom of an element is called valency of the element.

With the help of an example we can understand it much better -

H2O - In this compound oxygen combines with two atoms of hydrogen therefore the valency of Oxygen is 2.

H2S - In this compound sulphur combines with two atoms of hydrogen therefore the valency of sulphur is 2.
