Viscosity is the property of fluid in motion by virtue of which a force of resistance exist between the different layer of the fluid whenever there is relative motion between them .

According to Newton's love frictional force (or viscous force ) between two layers is given by :

 \boxed{ \bf{F= -  \eta A. \frac{dv}{dz} }}

Here, η is called coefficient of viscosity and dv/dz represents the viscosity gradient between different layer parallel to xy-plane

  • SI unit of η is Ns/m²
  • CGS unit of η is decapoise (= 10 poise)
  • Dimentional formula of η is  \sf{ \small{(ML^{ - 1} {T}^{ - 1} ) }}
