Explanation with examples :-

  • The salt which contain water of crystallisation is called hydrated salt.

  • Every hydrated salt has a fixed number of water molecules in it. Example : copper sulphate - \rm{CuSO_4.5H_2O}.

  • Copper sulphate contains 5 molecules of water of crystallisation in one formula unit of salt and it is called copper sulphate pentahydrate.

  • Water of crystallisation is a part of crystal structure of a salt. The water of crystallisation gives the crystals of salt and in some salt, their colour. For example : \rm{CuSO_4.5H_2O} is in blue colour. \rm{FeSO_4.7H_2O} is green in colour. \rm{Na_2CO_3.10H_2O} & \rm{CaSO_4.2H_2O} are white in colour.
