It is a laboratory method for the preparation of symmetrical and unsymmetrical ether.

In this method ,Alkyl halide is treated with sodium alkoxide (Na-oR) which gives ether.

It is not possible on Aryl halide, vinyl halide

Williamson synthesis: It is used for the preparation of simple as well as mixed ethers. Alkyl halide is heated with alcoholic sodium or potassium alkoxide to form corresponding ethers. Thus, methyl iodide, on heating with alcoholic sodium methoxide forms dimethyl ether.
