Winnowing usually follows threshing in grains preparation. It involves throwing the mixture into the air so that the wind blows away lighter objects and heavier grains fall back down.

The grains seperated by the above method need to be winnowed. Winnowing helps in the separation of the grains from the husk. The grains being heavier, fall straight to the ground while the light husk and hay are blown a little farther away by the wind. Winnowing is also done by a machine called winnowing machine.
