ADDITION REACTION :
it takes place in unsaturated hydrocarbons to make it saturated or single bond. For ex: Hydrogenation or ethene with hydrogen in presence of nickel.
CH2 = CH2 + H2 --------> CH3-CH3
OXIDATION REACTION :
Oxidation is controlled combustion where substance does not break down. Addition of oxygen to hydrocarbons is known as oxidation. For ex: Ethanol reacts with oxygen in presence of acidified KMnO4 (oxidising agent) to form ethanoic acid or acetic acid.
C2H5OH + 2O ------> CH3COOH + H2
COMBUSTION REACTION :
The breaking down of substance in CO2 and H2O when burned. Combustion is also known as burning. Alkanes are good fuels as compared to alkenes and alkynes.
For ex : Methane (CH4)
CH4 + 2O2 -----> CO2 + 2H2O + heat + light
