In physics work (W) is said to be done, when a force (F) acts on the body and point of application of the force is displaced (s) in the direction of force.Examples of work include lifting an object against the Earth's gravitation, driving a car up a hill, etc.

when you apply force on a body then the body gets displaced through a certain distance.. and then you can say the work is done ..
The unit of work done is N×m or joule...
e.g-you apply 10N force to push a car 10m
therefore the work done by you =10N×10m=100joule.....
