1. Define sentence?

A sentence is the biggest unit of a language, it gives form to a language. we come to know about a language in the form of sentences. A sentence is a combination of subject and predicate which makes complete sense.

2. Examples of sentences ?

  • I go to school
  • Manu is my friend
  • Girls are singing.
  • The children go to school.
  • The boys play cricket.

3. Explain kinds of sentences ?

There are five kinds of sentence :-

  • Assertive sentence
  • Interrogative sentence
  • Imperative sentence
  • Exclamatory sentence
  • Optative sentence

4. Explain its kinds ?

a. Affirmative :- An affirmative sentence makes an affirmative statement.

  • I drink milk
  • His father is a doctor.

b. Negative sentence :- A negative sentence makes a negative statement.

  • I do not drink milk.
  • His father is not a doctor.

  • do I drink milk?

Note :- An interrogative sentence ends with a mark of interrogation (?).

Define Sentence:-

  • A sentence is the largest unit of any language. In English, it begins with a capital letter and ends with a full-stop, or a question mark, or an exclamation mark.

  • The sentence is generally defined as a word or a group of words that expresses a thorough idea by giving a statement/order, or asking a question, or exclaiming.

Example of sentences:-

  • Robert was a good king.
  • He had a great army.
  • He wanted to bring peace to his kingdom.
  • There were many others who wanted to become king.
  • They started plotting against him.
  • Their plots were failing because of some trusted friends of the king.
  • Then they started killing those trusted friends.

Exclamatory Sentence:-

An exclamatory sentence expresses strong feeling. The exclamatory sentence always ends with an exclamation point.

  • That sounds incredible!
  • I can’t believe that you didn’t turn up to the party!

Imperative Sentence:-

An imperative sentence gives a command or a request. Imperative sentences do not have a subject as you is the implied subject. The imperative sentence is usually followed by a period (.). Very strong commands may be followed by an exclamation point (!).

Example:-

  • Do not yell at me!
  • Kindly take the seat next to the door.
  • Dare not you repeat the mistake.

Interrogative Sentence:-

An interrogative sentence asks a question. An interrogative sentence is followed by a question mark (?).

Example:-

  • Have you ever seen a purple butterfly?
  • Would you like to play with the boys at the next door?

Optative Sentence:-

The sentence which expresses a prayer, keen wish, curse etc. is called an optative sentence. This kind of sentence generally starts with ‘may’ and ‘wish’. Sometimes, ‘may’ remains hidden.

Examples:-

  • May the king of Westeros live long!
  • Long live the king of Westeros.
  • May you two live long enough to see your grandchildren!
  • May God bless us all.
  • May you become successful enough to buy love!
