The goal of glycolysis, glycogenolysis, and the citric acid cycle is to conserve energy as ATP from the catabolism of carbohydrates.

Under these conditions of excess ATP, the liver will attempt to convert a variety of excess molecules into glucose and/or glycogen.

(1) Glycolysis :

Glycolysis is the metabolic pathway that converts glucose C₆H₁₂O₆, into pyruvate.

(2) Glycogenesis:

The formation of glycogen from the sugar.

(3) Gluconeogenesis

It is a metabolic pathway that results in the generation of glucose from non-carbohydrate carbon substrates such as lactate, glycerol, and glucogenic amino acids.
