Natural Fiber

Definition: Natural fibres are the fibres that are obtained from plants, animals or mineral sources. They are usually processed and turned into yarn, which can then be converted into a product. Natural fibres like cotton are preferred for clothing materials due to their physical properties. They are usually soft and lightweight, making them a sought-after type in textiles.           Other than textiles, natural fibres are also widely used in non-textile applications. However, it should be noted that natural fibres are thinner and have less strength when compared with synthetic fibres. Some examples are cotton, silk, wool, etc. Natural fibres can again be divided into two types based on their source i.e. plants and animals.

 Examples of Natural Fibres

1. Animal fibers: These are the fibers that are obtained from animals. For example Wool, silk, etc.

  • Wool: Wool is a natural textile fibre obtained from furry animals like sheep, goats and camels. It is preferred for cloth manufacturing due to its capacity to hold heat.  Air is a bad conductor of heat. This makes clothes made from wool useful for people living in regions with cold climates, wool is also a very common clothing fibre
  • Silk: Silk is also a natural textile fiber that is obtained from silkworms. The rearing of silkworms to obtain silk is known as sericulture.

2. Plant fibers: These are the ones that are obtained from plants. These fibers are extracted from the plants to make fabrics.

  • Cotton – A ubiquitous material, it is obtained from cotton seeds and is widely used for textiles. Cotton is soft and lightweight, thus making it a comfortable fiber for clothing materials. All of this has increased its demand in the marketplace
  • Jute: It is a vegetable fiber that is soft, shiny, and is spun into coarse strong threads. It is a stronger fibre among cotton, silk and jute, it is obtained from plants and used to create sacks and other packaging materials.

  • The phrase "natural fiber" refers t fibers derived from (or manufactured by) animals and plants.
  • These fibers are used in the production of composite materials in a broad variety of ways.
  • By matting multiple layers of natural fibers into sheets, you may make paper and felt (a type of textile material).
  • Sweat and other liquids are well-absorbed by most natural fibers.
  • Different natural fibers may provide a broad diversity of textures (either individually or through a combination of two or more natural fibers).
  • Cotton fibers, for example, are natural fibers originating from the cotton plant that are used to make cotton garments with a light weight and a smooth feel.
  • Cotton fiber has the added benefit of being able to be woven into a variety of sizes and colours of apparel.
