Free climbing is a form of rock climbing in which the climber may use climbing equipment such as ropes and other means of climbing protection, but only to protect against injury during falls and not to assist progress.

Free climbing is a kind of rock climbing in which the climber may use climbing accessories such as strings and another means of climbing equipment for security in order to defend against damage while performing free climbing. However these accessories do not meant to support progress. The climber secures progress by applying the natural strength to move over the rock through handholds and footholds. Free climbing more particularly may involve solo climbing, regular climbing, sports climbing, and bouldering.

The term free climbing is used in opposition to support climbing, in which special aid climbing machine is used to support the climber in climbing. The word free climbing basically proposed "free from direct aid"
