Sources ofheat energy for domestic and industrial purposes are mainly wood, coal. kerosens, diesel, etc. These substances which heat energy on burning are called fuels. give Fuels may be solid, liquid or gas. A good fuel is one which :
- is readily available.
- is cheap.
- burns easily in air at a moderate rate.
- produces a large amount of heat (fuel efficiency).
- does not leave behind any undesirable substances.
There is probably no fuel that could be considered as an ideal fuel. We should look for fuel which fulfils most of the requirements for a particular use. Fuel efficiency is expressed in terms of its calorific value.
Same weight of coal, kerosene and LPG do not produce same amount of heat. The amount of heat energy produced complete combustion of one kg of a fuel is called its calorific value. The calorific value of a uel is expressed in a unit called kilojoule per kg (kJ/kg)
