Answer:

Magnetism is a class of physical phenomena that are mediated by magnetic fields. Electric currents and the magnetic moments of elementary particles give rise to a magnetic field, which acts on other currents and magnetic moments. Magnetism is one aspect of the combined phenomenon of electromagnetism

Explanation:

Five basic types of magnetism have been observed and classified on the basis of the magnetic behavior of materials in response to magnetic fields at different temperatures. These types of magnetism are: ferromagnetism, ferrimagnetism, antiferromagnetism, paramagnetism, and diamagnetism.

Hi,

Magnetism is a property of materials that respond at an atomic or subatomic level to an applied magnetic field.

There are three types of magnetic substances:-

  • Diamagnetic substances.

  • Paramagnetic substances.

  • Ferromagnetic substances.

Diamagnetic substances

Here the diamagnetic substances do not posses any magnetic moment on their own. When placed in external magnetic field they get freely aligned in a direction opposite to the magnetic field eg copper, lead etc.

Paramagnetic substances

Paramagnetic substances are those in which each atom/molecule has a net non zero magnetic moment but the total magnetic moment of the paramagnetic substance is 0. When such substances are placed in external magnetic field they get feebly magnetized in direction of magnetic field. eg sodium ,magnesium etc.

Ferromagnetic substances

Ferromagnetic substances are those in which each atom/molecule has a non zero magnetic moment. When such substances are placed in external magnetic field they get strongly magnetized in the direction of the field. Ferromagnetism has been explained by a scientist named Weiss on the basis of domain theory.
