anything which occupies space and has mass is called matter.Matter can be classified according to physical and chemical properties.  The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. A physical change involves the conversion of a substance from one state of matter to another, without changing its chemical composition

Meaning of some new terms

  1. pure substance: all the objects which are made of element or elements with definite structure is called pure substance.
  2. elements : all the subtance that are made up of same type of atom is called element.

eg: copper , gold , silver etc.

3. compounds all the substances in the environment which are made of more than one atom in same proportion are called compounds.

4. mixture all the substances which are made up of different atoms in uneven proportion are called mixture.

eg: milk, solution, etc.

note if you are in class 9 you will study about the physical properties in 1st lesson( matter in our surrounding) and chemical properties in 2nd lesson ( matter around us)
