National Water and Sanitation programme. ... The Union Government of India appointed the Environmental Hygiene Committee (1948 - 49), which recommended a comprehensive plan for providing safe water supply and sanitation to the population. Thereafter the National Water Supply and Sanitation Programme was launched in 1954.
