definition of operating system? why do we need an Operating System?

The software that supports basic functions of a computer is known as operating system. It manages all software and hardware of the computer. So if it is not present then our software and hardware will not function and without that we can not use our computer.

an operating system is basically a system software  which controls the hardware n sftware n provides services for computer programs.there r 7 types of operating system:-
Single- and multi-tasking
Single- and multi-user
Distributed
Templated
Embedded
Real-time
Library
we need operating system because w
ithout an operating system, a computer cannot be of any important use as the computer's hardware will not be able to communicate with the software...os is the most important software  that runs on a computer.....os manages the computer's memory and processes...os help the user to commuicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the binaary language
