The software that supports basic functions of a computer is known as operating system. It manages all software and hardware of the computer. So if it is not present then our software and hardware will not function and without that we can not use our computer.

1 Single- and multi-tasking
2 Single- and multi-user
3 Distributed
4 Templated
5 Embedded

we need operating system because without an operating system, a computer cannot be of any important use as the computer's hardware will not be able to communicate with the software...os is the most important software that runs on a computer.....os manages the computer's memory and processes...os help the user to commuicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the binaary language
