A prokaryote is a unicellular organism that lacks a membrane-bound nucleus, mitochondria, or any other membrane-bound organelle. The word prokaryotecomes from the Greek πρό (pro) "before" and κάρυον (karyon) "nut or kernel".Prokaryotes are divided into two domains, Archaea and Bacteria.
