The forests in the ganga-brahmaputra delta are known as Sunderbans because these are full of 'Sundari trees'. Thus, the delta is named after the 'sundari' tree.
Answer:
There are two etymological theories about how “Sunderban” got its name. Both the theories are closely related.
First Theory -
The “Sunderban” is a mangrove forest that has a large population of a mangrove plant species known as “Sundri” in Bengali and Sanskrit languages. The taxonomical name of the plant is H. fomes. According to the theory, the region got it’s name “Sunderban” from the plant “Sundri”.
Second Theory -
The “Sunderban” region is a lush forest situated across the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta. The forest is known to be a beautiful, scenic place. “Sunderban” literally means “Beautiful Forest” in Bengali language. That is how it could have got it’s name.
In either way, “Sunderban” is a beautiful forest, full of “Sundri” mangroves, which has a rich and diverse flora and fauna such as the Bengal Tiger. The Bengal Tiger is the “National Animal” of both India and Bangladesh.
