Democracy is a system of government that allows the citizens to cast vote and elect a government of their choice. India became democratic after its independence from the British rule in 1947.

Many countries have a democratic system. However, India is the largest democracy in the world. It runs on five democratic principles including sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic and republic.

Not only the largest, Indian democracy is also known to be one of the most successful ones. Democracy in India gives its citizens the right to vote irrespective of their caste, color, creed, religion and gender.

The government must work on eliminating poverty, illiteracy and gender discrimination  in order to ensure democracy in true sense.
