Many countries after gaining independence from colonial power tends to drift towards military dictatorship or communist rule. Power in these countries are centralised to a few people and common citizens are left powerless as they got no say in policy making.

However countries like India have been fairly successful in empowering it's citizens by choosing the path of democracy through experimentation. Democracy allows people to vote according to their preferences. Electorates in India may chose to vote on lines of social class hierarchy like caste and religion. But after 5 years they get an opportunity to change their voting preferences to growth, development or any other factor may deem fit to them.

So democracy allows this decentralisation of power, which empowers its citizen to participate in elections, which gives them a chance to correct their own mistake.
