Democracy is a form of government, rule by the people, which has varieties from direct democracy, practiced in small New England towns via their Town Meeting, up to large democratic republics.  You probably know other forms of government like monarchies (a single leader, usually elected), theocracy (rule by a religious leader), etc.

Capitalism is an economic system, based on private ownership and free markets.   It also exists in a number of varieties.  Other notable economic systems include socialism and communism.
