Democracy is about rule by the people.

Abandoning that means that rule should be by a group of people who might not act in the best interests of others as seems to be happening in our representative “democracies” or to have no rule at all.

The competition and powerplay has to do with political parties which are not from ancient Athens but from the oligarchic Roman Republic.

If there was no scope for morality then there would not be a care about avoiding potentially worse forms of rule such as under the few (oligarchy), by the “best” (aristocracy), by the one (autocracy) or by the absolutist (dictator or tyrant monarch).
