Democracy must be based on free and fair elections because of the following reasons:
•Holding elections of any kind is not sufficient. The elections must offer a real choice between political alternatives.
•It should be possible for people to remove the existing ruler if they wish.
•A democracy must be based on free and fair elections where those currently in power have the fair chance of losing.
•for ex: In Mexico people seemed to have a choice but in practice they had no choice. There was no way the ruling party could be defeated.These are not fair elections.
