Democracy, which derives from the Greek word demos, or people, is defined, basi- cally, as government in which the supreme power is vested in the people. In some forms, democracy can be exercised directly by the people; in large societies, it is by the people through their elected agents.
Democracy comes from a Greek word ‘demokratia’. In Greek, ‘demos’ means people and ‘kratia’ means rule. So, democracy literally means people’s rule.
1. It's a form of govt. in which rulers are elected by the people.
2. It’s based on “free & fair” election where those currently in power have a fair chance of losing.
3. In a democracy, each & every adult citizen has one vote and each vote has one value.
4. In this form of govt., the final decision making power rests with those elected by the people.
