Demoness outwitted
(Summary)
Long, long ago there lived a poor couple, Kaliyong and his wife Ebecha, in Khangabok, a village located 25 km south of Imphal, in the state of Manipur. This couple had two little children named Laija and Thombu. The family lived happily. I Most of the time the husband remained at home but at times he had to go out to earn his livelihood, leaving behind his wife and children. It was believed that al demoness lived in the jungle nearby. She visited the village houses where the male members had gone out. In thei absence of the males, she would frighten the small children and their mothers. The demoness spread a great terror in the village. i One day, Kaliyong had to leave his children and wife alone for a few days as his cousin, Shankshei, was getting married. The village where Shankshei lived was at a qreat distance. Hence, it would take minimum four days for Kaliyong to return. Kaliyong was hesitant to leave his family because of the demoness' terror. Ebecha, his wife, was not only witty and wise but also brave. She assured her husband that she would keep the children safe under her care. She said, Dear Kaliyong, you may go without any fear. i I'm capable enough to handle any situation.' Kaliyonq said, "'m confident of youri capabilities but the demoness is very cunning. She visits only those houses where there are only women and children, whom she can easily overpower. On hearing this. Ebecha replied confidently, "No evil will befall our family. Let the demoness come. I'm not afraid of her.' Being assured by his wife, Kaliyong left for Shankshei's village. " Ebecha was alone at home with the children. She took extra precaution and latched all the doors and windows of the house well before sunset. She served dinner to herl children and sent them off to bed early. Late at night, she heard someone knocking at the door. It did not take Ebecha much time to understand who was at the door. i The courageous Ebecha gathered all her strength, got rid of her fear and cried in a husky voice, "Who's there at this late hour of the night?' The knocking stopped and al strange voice from outside said, Is Kaliyong in the house?" Not losing her confidence, Ebecha pretended that her husband was at home and i spoke loudly so that the demoness could hear her. She said, Darling, someone has come to meet you at this late hour. Should I open the door or will you come and seei for yourself? Within seconds she heard footsteps retreating towards the jungle. i The next night, the demoness came again at the same hour. She asked the samei question and Ebecha answered with the same confidence without showing any fear. I The demoness returned but she did not give up and kept troubling Ebecha for four nights. However, she could not shake Ebecha's confidence and courage. i On the fifth day, Kaliyong returned home after the fall of dusk. His wife narrated thei incidents of the past four nights to him. He listened to her attentively and the couple planned to teach the demoness a lesson. As usual, on the fifth day the demoness came again to Ebecha's house late at night. She asked the same question, Is Kaliyong at home?"chased the This time Ebecha pretended to be afraid. In a frightened voice, she said, Sorry, my husband is not at home. He's gone to work in a far-off village. I'm alone at homei with my two small children. The demoness was very happy to hear this. In a scary voice, she said, 'I knew your husband was going out. I've been waiting for thisl opportunity for a long time.' Trying to frighten Ebecha, she started pushing the door violently and screaming loudly. The clever couple had a heavy stick ready at the door. The brave Kaliyong picked up the stick, opened the door and hit the demoness hard. The demoness ran towards the jungle. Kaliyong raised an alarm and along with the villagers, demoness into the jungle. At last, she ran into a small aloof house in the jungle. The villagers caught her and found that she was no demoness but Konami, a poori woman who had no family. She started crying and begged for their forgiveness. Shei told the villgers that she had nothing to eat, so she stole fruits from their orchards i at night. She frightened the villagers so that they could not come out of their houses while she plucked fruits stealthily. The villagers offered her work and promised to provide her food. The woman readily accepted the offer. She started working in thei villagers' fields and they took good care of her. Now, there was no terror in thei village and all the people lived happy and peaceful lives.
