Given:

Experiment

To find:

Explain boiling point of water

Solution:

(a) To demonstrate: an activity to explain boiling point of water and a neat labelled diagram

Step1:

Take 100ml of water in a test tube, cover its mouth a two-holder stopper. Fix thermometer to one of the holes in the cork and a glass tube through the another one in such a way that it hangs in air.

Step2:

Take a burner or spirit lamp to heat the water. keep the wire gauze on the tripod stand and place the test tube over it.

Step 3:

Take thermometer reading after fixed regular intervals of time (3 minutes). Once the temperature rises above 80°C, reduce the time interval to check temperature increase.

Step 4:

Take the reading at the point when the water starts boiling and take at least 4-5 readings even after the boiling. Water starts boiling at 100°C.

(b) To define the terms involved: latent heat, latent heat of vaporization, etc.

Latent heat:

It is the energy required to convert liquid or solid into vapor or liquid without the change of temperature.

Latent heat of vaporization:

It the amount of energy required to convert one mole of liquid into gas at its boiling point.

Boiling point of Water:

It is the temperature at which water starts to change into vapors. It is 100° C at 1 atmospheric pressure. It depends on atmospheric pressure.
