Aim: To prove that sound needs a medium to travel in.

Apparatus: Phone, Glass, Wooden block

Procedure:

  • Put the phone in the glass and give the phone a ring
  • Observe what happens (case (a))
  • Now cover the glass with a wooden block such that there is hardly any air in it and give the phone a ring again
  • Observe (case (b))

Observation:

  • In case (a) the phone rang and we heard the ringing tone or sound
  • In case (b) the phone must've rung but we just saw it vibrate and heard a faint ringing

Conclusion:

The phone rang easily in case (a) because it had a medium - air. But in case (b) we hardly heard something because there was almost no medium

Therefore concluding, a material medium is needed for sound to travel .
