Electroplating is the process of applying metal coating on metallic or non metallic surface through electro chemical process.

Material required :

  • Beaker
  • 9 volt battery
  • iron strip
  • copper metal
  • copper sulphate solution and
  • connecting wires

Procedure :

  • Take a beaker containing copper sulphate solution .
  • connect iron key at cathode terminal and copper metal electrode at anode terminal of battery by using connecting wires
  • Allow the current to pass through the solution  and observe .

Observation :

  • we observe that copper metal is coated on iron key

When the current is flowing, oxidation (loss of electrons) happens at the copper anode, adding copper ions to the solution. Those ions travel on the electric current to the cathode, where reduction (gain of electrons) happens, plating the copper ions onto the key.
