Answer:

Dengue is a viral fever transmitted through mosquito bites. The “Aedes” mosquito is the culprit. The disease is very prevalent in tropical countries like ours. Dengue is characterised by sustained high-grade fever, pain around, inside or behind the eyes, nausea and vomiting, abdominal discomfort, Diarrhea, muscle aches and measles-like red rashes all over the body. There are two types of dengue - classic dengue and dengue hemorrhagic. In the first type of dengue recovery is most likely to occur more quickly. But in the second type a decrease in platelet count can result in bleeding, organ failure, and even death. There are no vaccines against dengue. That’s why prevention is crucial. The vector “Aedes” mosquito breeds in stagnant fresh water and rainwater. So we must be vigilant in keeping our household areas clean. We must not allow water to stagnate in flowerpots, vases, tyres and puddles. Besides, we must protect ourselves from mosquito-bites. So we should always wear protective clothing like pants, long sleeves, and socks. We have to use mosquito nets and mosquito-repellent. Above all, we must consult a doctor if any fever persists for days.

Answer:

Dengue fever is a disease caused by the dengue virus and is spread from one person to the other by the female mosquito( the Aedes type) and hence it is a mosquito-borne tropical disease.

The common symptoms are relapsing high fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, vomiting, and also a type of skin rash.

This can have two major consequences- the dengue hemorrhagic fever( causes bleeding and lower count of blood platelets) and the dengue shock syndrome( extreme low pressure observed).

There are various types of the causative virus and infection caused by one type provides lifelong immunity against that type. However, infection with other types can cause severe complications.

Various tests are available to detect this disease, and a vaccine has also been recently approved in some countries. Treatment includes providing intravenous or oral fluid, maintaining the blood platelet level by several medicines and hospital admission in case of severe issues.
