The most important consequence of this effect is that water has its greatest density at 4oC. This means that the depths of all of the worlds oceans is always at 4oC giving a stable environment for the vast majority of the creatures on the Earth. 
If water cools below or is heated above 4oC it will rise towards the surface. 
Frozen water forms ice on the surface - if ice was denser than water then the oceans would have frozen from the bottom up in the ice ages and all life on Earth would have died. 
Warm water rises causing vast currents in the oceans which circulate heat from the equator to temperate regions (look at the gulf stream) and control the weather of the whole planet.
