The story begins when Ms. Loona is flown in an airplane and her pictures flashed all over in the local daily. This promoted her social rival, Mrs. Packeltide to take on an expedition. The author evokes laughter by citing, “In a world that is chiefly supposed to be swayed with hunger and love, Mrs. Packeltide was an exception. Her movements and motives were chiefly governed by a dislike of Loona Bimberton.” Mrs. Packeltide was hurt and battered by her rival and her vanity peeps from the mask of the society’s fashion. She then takes the help of the villagers to achieve the feat; to kill a tiger and outshine her social rival. She paid the villagers a sum of one thousand rupees to help her kill the tiger without any risk. Saki, then introduces Mrs. Mebbin, who adopted an elder sister attitude towards money. Mebbin, in the long run, blackmailed Mrs. Packeltide for a huge sum of money. The characters are petty, shallow and mercenary. They go to any extreme to achieve false glory and are deplorable.
