Forgiveness is the underlying theme of the play, The Bishop’s Candlesticks. In the play we see the miraculous and transforming power of forgiveness. The Bishop is an embodiment of this divine quality. His sympathy, forbearance and forgiveness transform a hardcore convict into a good human being. If the convict had received forgiveness earlier in his life, he would not have become a criminal.

The instant transformation takes place when the recaptured convict is brought to the Bishop so that he could confirm that the candlesticks recovered from the convict were his; however, the Bishop saves the convict by saying that he had given the candlesticks to him. The Bishop’s lie told to the gendarmes not only saved the convict but also transformed him.
