$$$${{{{{{{{{{When a fluid containing some dispersed substances is brought in contact with some specially treated/ prepared solid particles, the molecules of the dispersed substances may be retained on the surfaces of the solid particles. This phenomenon is termed as adsorption.

The solid material is referred to as an adsorbent and the substance retained on an adsorbent is termed as adsorbate. Adsorption is not only an effective method for removal of pollutants from gaseous streams, but also for abatement of water-borne pollutants. The phenomenon of adsorption has been investigated experimentally and various theories have been proposed to explain the observations. But a theory, which may explain most of the observations, is yet to be developed.
