A mass on a spring is the simplest kind of simple harmonic oscillator . we now show that hooke's law guarantees conditions ( period independent of amplitude ) differential equation for SHM . A differential equation is simply an equation containing a derivation.
Example of simple harmonic motion is a pendulum though only if it swings at small angles.
