Actually, the only way we can derive kinetic energy is by some rigouous calculus.
However, if we look deep down into the book Principia by Sir Newton
Kinetic energy is a defined quantity for all particle behaving matter in the universe
Kinetic energy is defined as the product of Momentum and velocity of the body
The numeric 1/2 in the formula is actually obtained when we are deriving the formula from integral calculus.
