Explanation:

generally Fe3o4 is a mixed oxide,composed of two oxides Feo and Fe2o3

In Feo oxidizing state is +2

In Fe2o3 oxidizing state is +3

Therefore for calculating oxidizing state of Fe3o4 we take the averages of both constituent oxides therefore o.s of Fe3o4 is 3+2/2=2.5

also you could recognise that Feo+Fe2o3=Fe3o4

(in terms of number of atoms)
