When a line segment is divided we use section formula to find the coordinates of the point. Section formula can be basically of two types depending upon the division how the line segment is divided.

The two types are:

Internal Section Formula - It is defined as the formula when the line segment is divided internally in the ratio m:n and we use the formula

{[(mx2+nx1)/(m+n)],[(my2+ny1)/(m+n)]}

Breaking it down, the x coordinate is (mx2+nx1)/(m+n) and the y coordinate is (my2+ny1)/(m+n)

External Section Formula- It is defined as the formula when we actually extend  the line segment more from its original point. Then we use the formula

P={[(mx2-nx1)/(m-n)],[(my2-ny1)/(m-n)]}

Breaking it down, the x coordinate is (mx2-nx1)/(m-n) and the y coordinate is (my2-ny1)/(m-n)
