it is a type of suffix that creates a new word which is derived from the base word, e.g.:-
1) -able  =  
lovable, learnable
2) -en   =  beweaken, sharpen 
3) -ess  =  waitress, actress
4) -ish  =  childish, bookish
5) 
-ment  = government, development
