In series combination, the current passing through each resistor will be the same.

V = V1 + V2 + V3

V = IR1+ IR2 + IR3

V = I (R1 + R2 + R3)

V/I = R1 + R2 + R3

Therefore,

R = R1 + R2 + R3

In parallel combination, potential difference across each resistor will be same

I = I1 + I2 + I3

I = V/R1 + V/R2 + V/R3

I/V = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3

Therefore,

1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3
