Capillary action in glass tubes. The rise or fall of liquids in a capillary tube depends upon the interactions between the tube and the liquid. The meniscus is the curve caused by surface tension in the upper surface of a liquid. It can be either convex or concave.

Question

why sand is drier then clay

Answer

Due to narrow pores in clay, water rises in the clay due to capillary action and keeps it damp. Practically no pores or capillaries exist in sand and hence water cannot rise in sand. So sand is drier than clay.
