So, when the object is launched:

v = u + at :   0 = u - gt :   t = u/g

v^{2} - u^2 = 2as

- u^2 = 2(-g)s :              s = u^2 /2g

Avg. Speed:  u^2 /2g / u/g :  (u^2 * g) /(2g * u) : u/2

Hence u/2 is the average speed.
