in series,the potential difference is equal across each resistor let it be v
let the 3 resistors be r1,r2,r3
let the current in each resistor be I
let equivalent resistance be r in series
then Ir=Ir1+Ir2+Ir3
Ir=I(r1+r2+r3)
r=r1+r2+r3
in parallel current across each resistor is equal
let the total current in circuit be I
I=v/r
I=I1+I2+I3
v/r=v/r1+v/r2+v/r3
v/r=v(1/r1+1/r2+1/r3)
1/r=1/r1+1/r2+1/r3
