The electron possesses potential energy, because, it is in the electrostatic field of the nucleus. The electron also possesses kinetic energy by virtue of its motion. ∴En=-Ze28πε0r . i.e., En=-Z2me48ε20n2h2 for hydrogen like atoms

Total Energy of nth orbit = – 13.6/n2 eV

The total energy of an electron in the nth orbit of an atom is the sum of the Kinetic Energy and Potential energy in the orbit.
