work done = force * displacement

work done = force * -Displacement

Work done W = FS cos θ, where F is the force applied, S is the distance moved and θ is the angle between them. Maximum work is done when θ = 0 or cos θ = 1. We have to find the distance moved by the block, S. For that first we have to find the acceleration, a, of the block. We have F − mg sin ϕ = ma. Let us take g to be 10 m/s2 and ϕ = 37° From the given data we can write the following equation: 20 N − 2 kg x 10 m/s2 x sin 37° = 2 kg x a i.e. 20 − 20 x 3/5 = 2a ⇒ a = 4 m/s2. S = ut + ½at2. = 0 + ½ x 4 x 1 = 2 m. Maximum work done W = FS = 20 N x 2 m = 40 J (Here we have assumed that the frictional force is zero. If we consider that the net work done will decrease. As we have to calculate the maximum work done it is ok to neglect that term. )
