The principle of method of mixtures is based on law of conservation of energy. When two substances of different temperatures are mixed together, the heat lost by the hot body is equal to the heat gained by cold body. Heat exchange occurs until the mixture attains equilibrium.

If two or more bodies at different temperatures are brought into thermal contact, the net heat is lost by the hot bodies is equal to net heat gained by the cold bodies until they attain thermal equilibrium. If heat is not lost by any other process to the surroundings,

i.e. Net heat lost= Net heat gain

This is called principle of method of mixtures.
