Explanation:

When an object is raised through a height its Potential energy is raised. Since work is done against gravity to raise its height, its energy is also called Gravitational Potential Energy.

Let the mass of the object = m

The height to which it is raised = h

Minimum Force required to lift the object is same as the weight of object or mg.

So, Work done(W) in lifting object

W = Force × Displacement

(Here displacement is height to which the object is raised)

Therefore, W = mg x h

Thus, Gravitational potential energy (Ep) of the object is : Ep = mgh
