Derry was withdrawn and defiant for many reasons. His face had been disfigured in a mishap in which acid had fallen on one side of his face. It had disfigured his face for the life time. People who saw him, reacted to it shockingly. He had started disliking people; even his parents often made him feel low about his scar. He had alienated himself from people. He preferred being alone and distant from people. So, he was usually withdrawn and defiant.
