The greater the body mass the greater the surface area of air sacs needs to be as with more body mass there becomes are higher demand for oxygen. Now the body can get this by either having larger lungs ( quite hard to do inside of limited space ) or increase the surface area of air sacs. By doing this it allows for a more efficient gas exchange and taking in more oxygen
